Painting night scenes, or “nocturnes,” can feel like a daunting task. How do you capture the magic of a glowing streetlamp or the subtle depth of moonlit shadows? In this blog post, I’ll share my top tips for creating stunning nocturne paintings that captivate the viewer and stand out as some of your most atmospheric work.

Key Tips for Nocturne Success

1. Prime with Black Gesso

Starting with a black canvas sets the tone for your painting and helps create depth. It’s the perfect base for glowing highlights.

2. Balance Light and Shadow

To mimic the eye’s natural adaptation to darkness, keep at least 75% of your painting in dim or dark values. This creates a sense of contrast and realism.

3. Build Light Values Gradually

Rushing to bright highlights can make your painting feel flat. Instead, layer your light values slowly, starting with muted tones and working toward your brightest areas.

4. Use Matte Varnish for Consistent Values

Dark pigments like Alizarin Crimson and Hooker’s Green often dry glossy, which can disrupt the illusion of depth. A matte varnish ensures consistent value perception across your painting.
